The Greens have called out the Abbott Government for holding up vital country of origin food labelling laws which would protect South Australian growers.
The Australian Greens are urging the major parties support farmers and workers in the Riverland by backing a new push for country of origin labelling laws.
Senator for South Australia Penny Wright said the Greens would introduce new legislation for mandatory labelling in the Senate this week.
"Everyone wants to support our farmers and workers by buying local, but the current labelling laws are too confusing and can be misleading," said Senator Wright.
The Greens have congratulated Alinta Energy for their decision to proceed with a feasibility study into a solar thermal power station with storage, in Port Augusta.
“This is a great step forward for South Australia and a win for the dedicated Port Augusta community who have been campaigning for a base-load solar thermal power station for years,” South Australian Greens Senator Penny Wright said.
“Solar thermal will keep jobs in Port Augusta, improve the health of the community and uniquely position the town for the future.
The Australian Greens have moved to protect South Australian farmers from shale gas fracking, as community concern grows over unconventional mining on farming land.
Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Senator Penny Wright today sponsored a Senate motion in favour of giving landholders legal rights to refuse shale and fracking on their properties.
"This is a dangerous industry that puts our precious water and farming land at risk," Senator Wright said.
Senator WRIGHT (South Australia) (10:07): I too rise to speak on the Defence Legislation Amendment (Woomera Prohibited Area) Bill 2013, and to highlight the fact that this bill is being rushed through the parliament without the necessary due diligence.
We give notice that on the next day of sitting we shall move that -
The Senate notes:
1. The concern of communities in South Australia and Western Australia about their land and water being threatened by shale and other unconventional gas mining.
2. That landholders lack the legal right to refuse shale and other unconventional gas mining on their land.
3. The scientific uncertainty surrounding the environmental and health implications of hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') for shale and other unconventional gas mining.
The Australian Greens yesterday were the only party to vote in favour of recognising the ecological, economic and social importance of the Kangaroo Island Canyons and Pool to the Kangaroo Island community and South Australian community as a whole.
Earlier this month, Bight Petroleum applied for approval under national environmental laws to begin exploring for oil and gas in Commonwealth waters to the west of Kangaroo Island between January and May next year. The company intends to start drilling in 2014.
The Australian Greens are urging the Federal Government to commit to supporting local communities, regional jobs and a sustainable future, by supporting Alinta Energy's plans to build a solar-thermal plant in Port Augusta.
Power company Alinta Energy is reportedly meeting with the Federal Government this week regarding the establishment of a solar-thermal power station in Port Augusta.
If the Government is committed to creating jobs in South Australia, it should support the creation of 1800 jobs in Port Augusta, Australian Greens Senator for South Australia, Penny Wright, said today.
"Transitioning the Port Augusta power plants to solar thermal power will create 1800 jobs in the community, contributing significantly to the social and economic wellbeing of people living in Port Augusta," Senator Wright said.
The long-term sustainability of agriculture is essential for Australia’s society, economy and environment. Many threats are facing the sector, including climate change and competition for farm land. Rural Australia faces complex agricultural, environmental and social challenges that the Greens are strongly committed to addressing.
