The impact of the budget on youth mental health

Senator WRIGHT (South Australia) (22:09):  On 13 May this year, the coalition government handed down a budget that was really quite unprecedented. I have seen quite a few budgets come and go in my life span, but I am hard pressed to think of a budget that has attracted such universal condemnation from people right across the political spectrum in terms of its unfathomable burden—the burden it places on some of the most disadvantaged people in the community.

Greens motion in support of Gonski funding for rural schools

I move that the Senate:

1.       notes the motion passed by the NSW Nationals Annual General Conference calling on the Federal Government to honour the six year Gonski funding agreement between the Commonwealth and the NSW government;

2.       acknowledges rural schools will continue to be significantly disadvantaged as a result of the Abbott Government's decision to fund only the first four years of this agreement; and

3.       supports the NSW Nationals' courage in standing up to the Federal Government in the interest of their communities.

Supporting local residents rights to say no to unconventional gas exploration

I move that the Senate:

1.      notes the importance of protecting valuable agricultural, residential and conservation land from unconventional gas activities;

2.      supports the right of landholders and local residents to say "no" to unconventional gas exploration and mining in their communities;

3.      recognises the concerns expressed by communities in the South East of South Australia over potential groundwater contamination from unconventional gas activities; and
