Suicide Report Cries Out for More Collaboration: Greens

Media Release
Penny Wright 28 Mar 2012

The Australian Greens have called on the Federal Government to take note of and aim to work together with the Northern Territory Government to implement the recommendations of the Gone Too Soon: Youth Suicide in the Northern Territory report tabled before the Northern Territory parliament yesterday.

"The report clearly identifies the need for better collaboration between all levels of government and service providers. This is a clarion call we hear consistently," Greens spokesperson for Mental Health, Senator Penny Wright, said.

"Young people in the Northern Territory are 3.5 times more likely to take their own lives than young people in the rest of the country. This number is both sobering and horrifying and points to an urgent need to respond.

"It is vital that any strategy to combat suicide in the NT is culturally as well as geographically adequate and recognises the absolute importance of community involvement in developing and delivering a programmatic response.

"A discussion on how to better co-ordinate services between levels of government and tackle the high incidence of youth suicide should be on the radar at the next COAG meeting on April 13."
