Teacher training review incomplete

The Abbott Government's teacher training review overlooks critical elements in encouraging quality teaching and learning, say the Australian Greens.

Spokesperson for Schools Senator Penny Wright said the review did not look at how to attract the best and brightest into teaching careers.

"University entrance standards and accreditation are pieces of the puzzle, but no review of teacher training can be complete without examining what's needed to attract the top candidates to teaching," she said.

Labor MPs dump on party membership in nuclear vote

Labor Senators have today voted against their own party platform on nuclear policy, voting down a motion by Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Penny Wright opposing nuclear development in SA.

The motion quoted directly from the Labor Party's National Platform which says nuclear power presents "unique and unprecedented hazards and risks" and is at odds with Premier Jay Weatherill's recent announcement.

Senate vote of support for SA's CFS champions

The Australian Senate has today passed a motion thanking the Country Fire Service volunteers who fought to protect homes, properties and wildlife during the devastating Sampson Flat bushfires earlier this year.

The motion, moved by Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Penny Wright, also called on state and federal governments to ensure ongoing funding for CFS training, equipment and operations.

"The CFS did a fantastic job keeping South Australians safe and bringing the fire under control in some extremely challenging conditions," Senator Wright said.

Greens oppose guns in Parliament

The Greens have written to the President of the Senate opposing armed guards being stationed inside both chambers of Parliament.

"More guns don't make people safer," Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

"Australians don't want militarisation of our public spaces, which includes Parliament.

"The Greens do not support firearms being carried anywhere inside the building.

"It has been a long-standing practise in the Westminster system that no arms are to be carried in the Parliament."

Senate motion in support of the Country Fire Service

I move that the Senate:

1.       thanks those who fought to protect homes, properties and wildlife during the devastating Sampson Flat bushfires in South Australia during January 2015; 

2.       recognises the outstanding contribution of South Australia's Country Fire Service personnel in keeping residents safe and bringing the fire under control in challenging conditions;

3.       commiserates with those who lost their homes, properties and pets as a result of the fire;
