Minister must step in and stop oil company shafting Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island's community and tourism industry will be jeopardised if federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt fails to block seismic testing off the coast, says Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Penny Wright.

Senator Wright, who has been working with the Kangaroo Island community since the exploration was first mooted two years ago, said Bight Petroleum's report on community concerns was completely inadequate and showed disregard for South Australians.

"Throughout this whole process Bight Petroleum have shown complete disdain for the science - now they have shown complete disdain for the community," Senator Wright said.

"Their derisive report shows how little they understand the importance of Kangaroo Island to SA's economy and how little they care about the opinion of South Australians.

"Bight Petroleum has not justified their blanket assertions that no harm will be caused by the survey.

"It is absolutely imperative that the Environment Minister now rejects Bight Petroleum's application to conduct seismic testing off the coast of Kangaroo Island.

"Seismic testing will threaten Kangaroo Island's fishing industry and put more SA jobs at risk by threatening eco-tourism to the island.

"South Australians of every political persuasion want to see Kangaroo Island protected. It's time for Minister Hunt to listen and act to save Kangaroo Island."
