Holden closure: Greens call for summit to save manufacturing in SA

Media Release
Penny Wright 11 Dec 2013

South Australian Greens Senators Sarah Hanson-Young and Penny Wright have expressed their sympathies for the families that will be affected by Holden's closure and have called for the development of a sustainable manufacturing future for the state.

"The Greens are calling for a multi-party, multi-stakeholder summit to develop a sustainable manufacturing future for South Australia," Senator Hanson-Young said.

"Tony Abbott's thuggish demands that Holden hurry up and decide whether to stay or go, while ruling out any form of assistance, has just devastated South Australia."

Senator Penny Wright expressed her deep regret at the decision and the inaction of the Abbott government.

"Mr Abbott must urgently outline what he will do for the thousands of South Australian workers now facing a very uncertain future," Senator Wright said.

"This will have untold effects on the South Australian economy and the communities in Adelaide's north. The Federal Government must provide support for the transition these families now face."
