Greens condemn NT Government's gun giveaway

Media Release
Penny Wright 19 Mar 2015

Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Penny Wright says the Northern Territory Government's shotgun raffle is completely inappropriate.

Senator Wright, who is currently chairing a Senate inquiry into illicit firearms, said even though the gun would go to a licenced shooter, it was surprising the NT Government would offer a weapon as a prize to hunters to putting their permit returns.

"Governments have a responsibility to promote community safety and responsible gun ownership. This gun giveaway sends the wrong message to the community," Senator Wright said.

"Guns are not toys. They shouldn't be offered as prizes or rewards.

"There are now more guns in Australia than before the Howard-era buy-back. This is a real concern for law enforcement around the country - so you would really expect governments to instead be looking at ways to get guns off our streets."
