Dangerous shotgun should not be allowed in Australia

The Australian Green's spokesperson on legal affairs has condemned the Federal Government's decision to allow the ban on the Adler A110 lever-action shotgun to expire in a year.

Justice Minister, Michael Keenan, today stated the current ban will expire in a year.

Senator Wright said the Adler was a dangerous weapon and serious restrictions were needed for its ownership and use if the gun is to be imported into Australia.

"This gun would pose a huge threat to the safety of Australians in the wrong hands," Senator Wright said.

Abbott’s divorce tax is wound back – again

Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Penny Wright has welcomed the Senate overturning the Abbott Government's Family Court fee increases – for the second time.

Senator Wright’s disallowance motion knocked back the motion the first time, only to see the Government increase court fees by stealth.

Senator Wright co-sponsored the today’s disallowance motion with Labor, and has called on the Government to this time respect the will of the Senate.

Chance to shine a light into the darkest policy corners

Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Penny Wright has moved a motion to implement greater scrutiny of places where people are detained in Australia, including jails, police lock ups and psychiatric facilities.

Senator Wright has called on the Government and the Opposition to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) – which Australian signed up to in 2009.
