Greens spokesperson for Social Inclusion, Senator Penny Wright, has moved a motion in the Senate today to commemorate Social Inclusion Week and remind Australians that we all benefit from a fair and inclusive society.
"It is important for us to acknowledge that despite the relative wealth in our country, there are many who are facing isolation and exclusion and the reasons for this are varied and complex," Senator Wright said.
"Unemployment can result in low income which then leads to pressure on housing. Homelessness can affect physical and mental health and lead to a downward spiral.
"At a time where some Australian CEOs are being paid millions, many individuals and families are living on the margins and children are experiencing intergenerational disadvantage and poverty.
"Social inclusion is not just about income. It is also about Australians being able to live out their full potential and participate in society, and for this we need reliable infrastructure and appropriate social services.
"The Greens are working across our range of portfolios to create a liveable, inclusive society with strong mental health services, a fair go for people with disabilities, quality education and adequate social security payments.
"Social inclusion is everybody's responsibility - governments, non-government organisations, businesses and communities - but it is government policies that really lay the groundwork for addressing current inequalities."
The motion was passed in the Senate without opposition.
